Terjadi perdebatan alot saat itu, karena Jenderal Djoko menolak dan meminta tindak langsung (tilang), namun berkali-kali ditolak oknum anggota polisi lalu lintas saat itu dan menawar jalur damai.

Dalam penyamaran itu, kapolda kemudian mengeluarkan uang yang diminta oknum anggota tersebut. Setelah uang damai itu diberikan, dia kemudian membukan penyamaran dan langsung menangkap pelaku. Tidak lama kemudian Kabid Propam Polda Sumsel Kombes Pol Hendro datang ke lokasi untuk mengamankan pelaku atas perintah Djoko.

"Jadi kemarin, saya itu menyamar dan itu untuk menyelidiki, ternyata dapat juga," jelasnya saat ditemui di Polda Sumsel, Selasa (18/10/2016).

Menurut Joko, anggotanya itu melakukan pungli, karena tidak memiliki surat tugas ketika diminta.

"Dia (polisi pungli) saya tanya mana surat tugas, malah tidak bisa menunjukkan," jelasnya.

Selanjutnya, Djoko mengimbau kepada para anggotanya di seluruh Sumsel untuk tidak melakukan pungli dan menjalankan tugas denganbenar,  karena sesuai dengan perintah Presiden Jokowi, dia tak segan untuk menindak tegas petugas kepolisian yang melanggar disiplin dan kode etik.
