Salah seorang wanita yang mengambil foto selfie di lokasi itu adalah Solihat (40), yang mengaku menempuh perjalanan dua jam dari kota Cilegon. Ia datang bersama teman-temannya datang untuk memberikan bantuan berupa sumbangan pakaian untuk orang-orang yang kehilangan tempat tinggal akibat tsunami. 

Solihat menjelaskan bahwa foto selfie yang ia ambil di sana untuk menunjukkan betapa hancurnya lokasi tersebut pasca diterjang tsunami.

"Foto itu ada di Facebook sebagai bukti bahwa kita benar-benar di sini dan memberikan bantuan," katanya, kepada The Guardian.

"Ketika orang-orang melihat foto kehancuran mereka sadar mereka ada di tempat yang lebih baik. Gambar kehancuran akan mendapatkan lebih banyak 'like'. Mungkin karena itu mengingatkan orang untuk bersyukur," tambahnya.

Hingga Selasa (26/12) pukul 13.30 WIB, menurut laporan BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana), jumlah korban meninggal dunia akibat tsunami di Selat Sunda mencapai 429 orang, 1485 luka-luka, 154 menghilang, dan 16.082 orang mengungsi.

Ketika ditanya The Guardian soal apakah pantas mengambil foto selfie di lokasi bencana di mana kemungkinan banyak jasad masih belum ditemukan, Solihat menjawab semua itu tergantung pada niat. 

"Jika Anda mengambil foto selfie untuk pamer, maka jangan lakukan itu. Tetapi jika Anda melakukannya untuk berbagi kesedihan dengan orang lain, tidak apa-apa," ungkapnya.

"Saya ingin melihat kehancuran (akibat tsunami) dan orang-orang yang terkena dampaknya," katanya.

Ketika ditanya berapa banyak foto selfie yang dia ambil di daerah itu dia tertawa. "Banyak! Untuk media sosial, grup WhatsApp … ".
